Artist Statement
I paint nature as it comes to me. Growing up in the Deep South, I was surrounded by Civil War battlefields and spent a lot of time there, alone and in retreat from the suburbs. As an adult I lived in New York City for 10 years and gravitated towards rooftops, gasping for an unimpeded view of the only bit of the natural world that looked familiar--the sky. As a result of that experience, no matter were in the world I travel, I find myself looking upward to the edges and transitions to find visual meaning. I found that were ever I travel or who I meet, some things are the same. The sky, our peripheral vision of the flora and fauna, the vanishing points in our horizon lines provide a visual Lingua Franca, or common language; a boundary we snuggle up against for reassurance.
People love to see a beautiful sky. Often times the sky wears the colors we cloak upon its arcing curves, and it is reflecting our activity back to us. We are entranced, charmed and soothed by gazing into the mixing of what we perceive to be ethereal, that more often than not is a mirroring pool of the power that we exert on the earth.
